Jagannath temple of Puri – A Fascinating Journey to Lord Jagannath’s Abode

jagannath puri

The holy site of Jagannath Puri is known by several names such as Sri Kshetra, Purushottama Kshetra, Nilachala Dham, Jagannath Dham, Samanik Tirtha, Uddiyan Pith, Marta-Vaikuntha, Nilgiri, Niladri, Sankha Kshetra, Bhu-svarga, and Nrsimha Kshetra. Regarded as one of India’s (Bharat) foremost spiritual destinations, it is believed that the Supreme Lord Sri Vishnu takes a bath at Badrinath in North India, changes His attire in Dwarka in West India, enjoys His meals in Jagannath Puri in East India, and retires to Rameshwaram in South India. In Jagannath Puri, the Supreme Lord is worshiped in the form of His deity. A sighting of the Lord is said to grant one liberation from the material world, and visiting Jagannath Puri is believed to have the same spiritual merit as visiting all other holy sites. The term “Jagannath” translates to “Lord of the Universe,” and the temple was established by King Indradyumna on the Nilachal hill. The current temple was constructed in the 12th century on the site of its predecessor by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the progenitor of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.

Banshi vat or Vamshi vata, Bhandirvan (Near Vrindavan)

vamshi vata banshi vat bhandirvan

Banshi vat, also known as Vamshi vata, is a revered location in Bhandirvan that lies just a few hundred meters from Bhandirvata, where Radha and Krishna’s wedding occurred. Krishna used to ascend this tree and play His flute to summon the cows grazing nearby, thus gathering them and bringing them back home. Occasionally, on a lovely and serene evening, He would also summon His beloved gopis from this spot. When they arrived, the rasa-lila would unfold under the shade of the Banshi vat. We consider ourselves greatly fortunate to have visited Banshi vat and to have smeared our sinful bodies with the dust of this holy place.

Radha Krishna Marriage (vivaha) place, Bhandirvan

radha krishna marriage bhandirvan

Bhandirvan, located in Vraja Mandala, is a sacred forest where the divine Gandharva marriage of Radha and Krishna took place long before Radha’s marriage to Abhimanyu. Lalita sakhi organized the necessary arrangements for the wedding while Lord Brahma presided as the head priest. In India, it’s typical for parents to choose a spouse for their children, but a gandharva marriage involves the personal selection of the bride and groom, without a lengthy ceremony. The couple exchange garlands and simple vows. The vat (banyan tree) at Bhandirvan holds significant importance in the pastimes of Radha and Krishna, where they shared many happy memories together. Krishna and his friends would often enjoy lunch together under the shade of this tree, sent by their mothers, and engage in playful activities.

There is an old kadamba (burflower) tree on the bank of the Yamuna river at Shergarh where Krishna took the clothes of young, unmarried girls from Vraja who were bathing after a month-long Katyayani-vrata. The place has come to be known as Chir Ghat. These girls would wake up every day at dawn, bathe in the river, and worship Katyayani devi with a mantra asking for Krishna to be their husband. During the vrata, they only ate unspiced Khichdi, which is a type of food that purifies the body before a ritual ceremony. To worship goddess Durga, the gopis made an earthen deity on the river bank and offered sandalwood pulp, fruits, leaves, garlands, and other fragrant substances. They prayed to the goddess as follows –

Tapovan, situated about one Kilometer to the east of Akshay Vat, lies on the bank of the river Yamuna. This is the sacred place where the unmarried Gopis of Gokul had performed austerities for an entire month of Agrahayana, desiring to attain Krishna as their husband. Every day the gopis would wake up at dawn, bathe in Yamuna, and worship Katyayani devi with the desire of attaining Krishna. During this month, these girls only subsisted on unspiced Khichdi (salty porridge). This kind of food (havisyanna) purifies one’s body before one enacts a ritualistic ceremony. The Gopis constructed an earthen deity of goddess Durga on the river bank and worshiped her with sandalwood pulp, fruits, leaves, garlands, and other aromatic substances. They prayed to the goddess as follows –

akshay vat shergarh pralambasura

Akshay Vat, or the eternal banyan tree, is situated about 8 Kilometers south of Rama Ghat (Aicha Dauji temple). Under the shades of this banyan tree Krishna, Balarama, and the other cowherd boys would love playing and having fun. They especially liked to wrestle here. It is believed that five thousand years ago, this place was full of banyan trees. The original tree was so gigantic that its branches extended across Yamuna, which flowed nearby at that time. Krishna and His friends would walk on those branches to cross over the river. ‘Akshay Vat’ is also the place where Balarama killed Pralambasura. Today, there is a beautiful Sita, Rama, and Lakshman temple adjacent to Akshay vat. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to this place to seek blessings and reminisce about the enchanting pastimes of the Supreme Lord.

The residents of Vraja Bhumi had been living in the pain of separation from Krishna and Balarama after the two brothers left for Dwarka. Their distress was so critical that Balarama had to come over to Vrajabhumi to comfort them. It is said that Vasudeva and Devaki did not send Krishna to Vrindavan as they feared that He would never return. Instead, they sent Balarama. Balarama spent the months of Chaitra and Baisakha at Vrajabhumi reassuring His parents, friends, relatives, and the gopis.

Kokilavan Shani Mandir (Shani dham temple)

kokilavan shani mandir temple

Kokilavan is situated three miles north of Nandgaon and one mile to the west of Yavat. To the west of Yavat, is a forest where many cuckoos would sing. Once Krishna entered the forest and made the sound of cuckoos to send a call to His beloved Radharani. Reciprocating to Krishna’s sound, thousands of other cuckoos began cooing, creating a huge ruckus. When Jatila (Radha’s mother-in-law) heard the sounds, she became very curious. Jatila asked Vishaka if she had heard anything like that before. Vishaka sought permission from Jatila so that she and Radharani could go to the forest and find out more. In this way, Radha entered the forest with her sakhis where she was able to meet with Krishna and enjoy unlimitedly. This forest is hence also known as ‘Kokilavan’ as it was here that Krishna made sounds of a Kokila bird (cuckoo) to send signals to Radharani. In this forest of Kokilavan is situated a magnificent temple of Lord Shani deva, which is also renowned as ‘Kokilavan Shani Mandir’.

Prem Sarovar, Barsana – Lake of Radha and Krishna’s tears

prema sarovar barsana prem

Prem Sarovar (Prem – Love, Sarovar – Lake) is a lake of love and tears situated near Barsana, close to the village of Gajipur. In Bhakti Ratnakara it is stated –

Ei ‘Prem Sarovar’ dekho Srinivasa
Etha Prema Vaichittya bhaver prakash
(Bhakti Ratnakara)

O Srinivasa, behold Prem Sarovar, where the ‘Prema Vaichittya bhava’ was manifested.

This place was previously laden with Kadamba trees. Once Sri Lalita devi brought Radharani to where Prem Sarovar is now situated. Sri Krishna also arrived along with Madhumangala. Radha and Krishna, the divine couple, were then seated on a golden throne. When both were engrossed in conversing and relishing each other’s association, a honey bee (Madhu Makkhi) began hovering around Radhika’s ear. This disturbed Radharani a bit, and hence Krishna asked Madhumangala to drive it away. Madhumangala obliged and after chasing away the honey bee, he shouted, ‘Madhu has gone away’. Madhumangala was referring to Madhu-makkhi (honey bee) but Radharani took it as a reference to Madhusudana (Krishna).
