Chaitanya Upanishad has been excerpted by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura from the sacred texts of the Atharva Veda. The Thakura searched the length and breadth of Bengal to obtain an original copy of this rare manuscript that describes the unique position, advent of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and how He is our savior from the evil influences of Kali Yuga. He was finally provided with a copy of this original hand-written manuscript from Pandita Madhusudana Maharaja, of Sambala Pura. The texts along with their English translations is provided below.

Verse 1

atha pippaladah samit panir bhagavantam brahmanam upasanno
bhagavan me subham kim atra caksvasveti

Carrying firewood in his hands, Pippalada humbly approached his father, Lord Brahma, and inquired: “O my Lord, please tell me how I may attain an auspicious life.”

Verse 2

sa hovaca
bhuya eva tapasa brahmacaryena sasvat ramasva mano vaseti

Lord Brahma answered, “Always be very satisfied with austerity, celibacy, and control of the mind. In this way you shall attain all auspiciousness in your life”

Verse 3

sa tatha bhutva bhuya enam upasadyaha- bhagavan kalau papac channah prajah katham mucyeran iti

Pippalada obeyed these instructions, and after having become pure in his heart and mind, he again approached Brahma, his father, and asked, “O Lord, please explain how the sinful living entities of Kali-yuga may be delivered.”

Lord Brahma replied, “Listen carefully, for I shall reveal to you a confidential truth. Govinda, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the supreme enjoyer, whose form is transcendental, who is beyond the jurisdiction of the three modes of material nature, and who is the all-pervading Supersoul residing in the hearts of living entities, shall appear again in the age of Kali. Appearing as the greatest devotee, the Supreme Lord will assume a two-armed form of golden complexion in His abode of Goloka Vrindavana that is manifest on the bank of the Ganges at Navadvipa. He will broadcast pure devotional service in the world. This incarnation of the Lord (Gauranga) is explained in the following verses”.

These three names of the Supreme Lord (Hari, Krishna, and Rama) may be explained as follows – (1) ‘Hari’ translates to ‘He who removes (harati) the knot of material desire from the hearts of living entities’. (2) ‘Krishna’ consists of two root words ‘Krish’ and ‘na’. ‘Krish’ implies ‘He who attracts the minds of all living entities’, and ‘na’ means ‘supreme transcendental pleasure’. (3) ‘Rama’ means ‘He who pleases (ramayati) all living entities’. The maha-mantra consists of the repetition of these holy names of the Supreme Lord.

Verse 15

Chaitanya eva sankarshano vasudevah parameshthi rudrah shakro brihaspatih sarve devah sarvani bhutani sthavarani carani ca yat kincit sad-asat-karanam sarvam. tad atra shlokah

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead who appears as Sankarshana and Vasudeva. He is the original father of Brahma, Shiva, Indra, Brihaspati, all demigods, and all moving and nonmoving entities. He is the cause of all that is temporary and all that is eternal. He is the original cause of everything. This is described in the following verses.

Verse 16-18

yat kincid asad bhunkte
ksharam tat karyam ucyate sat karanam param jivas
tad aksharam itiritam ksharaksharabhyam paramah
sa eva purushottamah
Chaitanyakhyam param tattvam
sarva-karana-karanam

This material world is temporary, whereas the individual living entities who try to enjoy matter are eternal. The Supreme Lord is superior to both the temporary material creation and the eternal individual living entities. This Supreme Person, the Absolute Truth, is none other than Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the original cause of all causes.
