Placing the feet of all the dear devotees of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu upon my heart, i worship them. Now please hear carefully, as i speak on the pastimes of Lord Gauranga, and how He incarnated in this age of Kali.

Text 5-6
Murari Gupta yeba Prabhu-tattva jane
Damodara Pandita pucchila tanra sthane
Kaha shuni ki lagi Gauranga avatara
Shunite ananda chite haiche amara

Translation –
Sri Svarupa Damodara Pandita (Mahaprabhu’s personal assistant) once asked Sri Murari Gupta, who knew the truth about Lord Chaitanya – ‘ Please tell me the reasons why Lord Gauranga had appeared in this world? My heart is filled with bliss to hear the answer’.

Text 7-8
Kene ba Shyama-varna tyaji haila Gaura-tanu
Kene ba kirtane luti , gaye loy renu
Kene ba nagara besh, chadiya sannyasa
Kene deshe deshe bule paiya hutash

Translation –
Why did He leave behind His dark complexion and accept the golden form of Lord Chaitanya ? Why does he roll on the ground on hearing Kirtana (singing of the holy names of the Lord) and allow His body to be covered with dust ?
Why did He leave His dress of a paramour and accept the robes of a mendicant ? Why ,alas, does He wander from one place to the other ?

Text 9-10
Kene kande Radha Radha Govinda baliya
Ghare ghare fiire kene prema jachaiya
Kahiba shakala katha parama nigura
Ya shunile tran paye akhilera mura

Translation –
Why does He cry calling out ‘Radha Govinda’ ? Why does He wander from one home to the other, freely distributing the love of God ? I (Locana das) shall narrate all of these confidential pastimes, hearing which , the ignorant people of this world will get delivered.

Purport –
Dristva madyati nutanambuda chayam samviksya barham bhaved
Atyantam vikalo vilokya valitam gunjavalim vepate
Driste shyama kisorake pi chakitam dhatte chamatkaritam
Ittham Gaura tanuh pracharita nija prema harih patu vah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita,
Text 14)

When Lord Chaitanya saw new rain clouds ,He was reminded of Krishna (Syamasundara). Thus He became mad with love for Himself (He is Krishna Himself). When he saw a peacock feather, He became greatly agitated and seeing a gunja bracelet , He trembled. He became filled with fear and wonder seeing a dark-complexioned boy, whom He had thought to be Krishna. In this way Lord Gauranga preached the glories of pure devotional service unto Himself.

Text 11-12
Shuniya Murari Kahe shunoho pandita
Ei saba tattva toma kariba bidita
Satyayuge chari angsha dharma-shastre kahe
treta-te tribhag dharma ganana karoye

Translation –
Hearing Svarupa Damodara’s questions, Sri Murari Gupta replied, ‘O learned one ! I shall reveal to you all these truths. According to the revealed scriptures, during Satyayuga, dharma is manifested in all its four parts (completely manifested). In Treta yuga, only three-fourth of dharma is calculated to be manifested’.

Text 13-14
Dvapare ardheka dharma kahi ye tomare
Kaliyuge ek angsha dharmera vichare
Adharma barila-dharma haila ye kshin
Svadharma chharila, varna ashrama bihina

Translation –
(Murari continued) ‘I shall tell you that in the age of Dvapara, Dharma manifested only half of its full potency. And in the age of Kali, it only manifested its one-fourth potency. As sins became rampant, religiosity waned. People started rejecting rules and regulations and one’s own natural occupational duties.’

Purport –
In Satya Yuga, the religious principles are manifested fully. The four pillars of religiosity are mercy, austerity, cleanliness and truthfulness. In the subsequent ages or yugas, like treta and Dvapara, religiosity declines steadily. The age of Kali, which is the last in the cycle of the four yugas and which lasts 432000 years, religiosity only stands upon the pillar of truthfulness. The remaining qualities of mercy, austerity or cleanliness are hardly existent. As a result people of kali are very unfortunate and prone to sinful tendencies. As a consequence there is a widespread suffering that infests the world during this age.
But this present age of kali is very different because it is in this age that lord Chaitanya, the most merciful incarnation of the Supreme, has blessed the world with the divine touch of His lotus feet. He is the essence of all the manifestations and all the incarnations of the Supreme. Lord Gauranga has blessed us with His most sublime instructions and the most enchanting pastimes in this age of Kali. Hence this Kali yuga, is in essence the most fortunate of ages.
dhanye kalau sampravishte, Gaura leela manorama;
prakata bhavita hy etat, vyaktam tada bhavishyati
(Urdhvamnaya Tantra)

The advent of the age of Kali is most auspicious because in the near future the most wonderful and enchanting holy Pastimes of Lord Gauranga will be most openly and widely established and broadcasted.

Sri Chaitanya Mangala reveals :

Ati aparupa leela prakashila prabhu
Chari yuge adbhut katha nahi shune kabhu
(Chaitanya Mangala , 1.94)

– Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had manifested the most wonderful incomparable pastimes, never heard before in any of the four yugas.

Text 15-16
Paapamaya ghor andhiyar haila Kali
Majila shakala loka adharma bikali
Dharma hina dekhiya narada mahamuni
Kali taribare daya karila apani

Translation –
(Murari continued) ‘Kaliyuga became filled with the blinding darkness of horrible sins. All People became engrossed and addicted to irreligious acts. Seeing that humanity was devoid of religion, the great sage Narada Muni, mercifully decided to rout Kali (the personification of sin)’.

Text 17-18
Bhabilen kalisarpa gilila sabare
Mone haila dharma-sansthapan karibare
Krishna binu dharma keho na pare sthapite
Abasya aniba Krishna Kali ke Tvarite

Translation –
‘Narada Muni thought that the snake-like Kali has now swallowed everyone in sin.He decided to re-establish the principles of religion. He knew that without Krishna no one has the power to establish religion in this world. Hence he decided that he would definitely bring Krishna to this world in order to drive Kali away’.

Text 19-20
Bhakta ichha Govindera haya sarvakal
Veda purana shastre iha achhoye vichar
Yadi Krishna-dasa muin houn sarvathay
Kalite aniba ami prabhu yadu-raya

Translation –
(Narada muni thought) ‘Whatever the devotee desires, Lord Krishna desires the same. This is the conclusion of the Vedic scriptures. If i truly am a servant of Lord Krishna, then i shall be able to bring the Lord in this Kali yuga.’

Text 21-22
Dekho aage Kaliyuga kare kon karma
Tabe se aniba Krishna sarvamaya-dharma
Aniba shakala devagana tanra sange
Astra parishadadi shakala sangopango

Translation –
(Narada continued) ‘First let me observe the activities (of people) in Kali Yuga. Then i shall summon Lord Krishna, who is the embodiment of religion. Along with Him, i shall bring all the demigods, His (the lord’s) weapons, His confidential associates and all His companions’.

Text 23-24
Brahma adi devagana sanakadi muni
Prithivite janam laila devi Katyayani
Dvarakaya yata acche ara chhilo yaduvamse
Prithivite janmibo nija nija angshe

Translation –
In this way, all the demigods headed by Brahma, all the sages headed by sage Sanaka, goddess Durga took birth in this world. The members of the Yadu family from Dvaraka also expanded themselves to appear on this earth.

Purport –
In the Srimad Bhagavatam , it has been foretold-

krishna-varnam tvishakrishnam sangopangastra-parshadam,yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah
(11.5.32)

In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead (Gauranga) who constantly sings the holy name of Krishna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krishna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, weapons , servants, and confidential companions.

Text 25-26
Kahiba shakala katha shuno savdhane
Prithivite avatara haila yenamane
Sab avatara sar Gaura avatara
Emono karuna kabhu nahi haya ara

Translation –
I shall recite the appearance pastimes of the Supreme Lord in this world ,in detail. So please listen carefully.Lord Gauranga is the very essence of all the other incarnations of the supreme. No other incarnation is as compassionate as Him.

Purport –
bhai re bhaja mor pranera Gauranga
gaura vina britha sab jivanera ranga

O brother ! Please worship Lord Gauranga, the Very Lord of my heart. Without Gauranga, all the happenings of one’s life are worthless.
(Sri Prema Vivarta)

Lord Gaurahari freely gives what no other incarnation of the Supreme Lord has ever given before – the ecstatic pure love of God. He does not consider one’s qualifications or background or pedigree before bestowing this supreme gift upon them, receiving which one achieves the ultimate perfection of his human life. He is the essence of all the other incarnations of the Supreme – ‘Avatara sar Gaura avatara’.

Narada muni reveals that Lord Gauranga is ‘Avatara sar’ :

Yata yata avatara saba haite sar
Kabhu nahi dekhi heno premar bhandar
Safal janam din, safal nayan
Ki dekhilun Gaura rupa , prasanna bayan
(Chaitanya Mangala , 2.121-122)

– (Narada muni says) ‘Of all the Lord’s incarnations , Lord Gauranga is the best. I have never ever seen such a reservoir of pure ecstatic love. My life has become successful, my eyes have borne fruit, as today I have been able to behold the beautiful form of Lord Gauranga with His pleasant, blissful, smiling face’.

This ecstatic love of God eludes the great demigods like Brahma, Shiva and Indra. Even Lakshmi devi, the wife of Lord Narayana, hankers to receive it. A yogi cannot achieve it , even after performing severe austerities for a thousand of years. A Jnani cannot smell it even after analysing the whole of the vedic scriptures. This ecstatic love of God is extremely rare but it can be easily achieved by the causeless mercy of Lord Gaurasundara.

That is why Srila Vasudeva Ghosh sings –

gora-guna ga-o suni
bahu punya phale so pahum milala
prema parasamani

– Please chant the glories of lord Gauranga and let me hear it with all my ears. It is after accumulating a great amount of piety that one gets to meet Lord Gaura, who is a touchstone of ecstatic spiritual love.

akhila jibera e soka sayara
nayana nimese sese
o-i prema lesa parasa na pa-ile
parana judabe kise

In the blink of an eye ,He dries up the sufferings of all fallen souls. How can a suffering soul, who has not yet received even a small fraction of the soothing love that Lord Gauranga bestows, bring fulfillment and happiness in his life ?

Also, Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

Rakso-daitya-kulam hatam kiyad idam yogadi-vartma-kriya-
Margo va prakati-kritah kiyad idam sristy adhikam va kiyat
Mediny-uddharanadikam kiyad idam premojjvalaya maha-
Bhakter vartma-karim param bhagavatas Chaitanya-murtim stumah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita,
Text 7)

What benefit did the world derive when the incarnations of the supreme Lord like Ramachandra, Nrsimha, and many others killed so many raksasa and Daityas ? What was the benefit derived when Lord kapila and other incarnations reveal the paths of sankhya and yoga ? Is it of great glory that Lord Brahma and other guna-avataras create, maintain and destroy the material universes ? How auspicious is it that Lord Varahadeva lifted and rescued the earth from the garbhodaka ocean ? We do not consider these pastimes to be so important. The most important of all things is that Lord Chaitanya has revealed the great splendour of pure ecstatic love for Himself. Let us glorify that Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Text 27-28
Para dukhe katara narada mahamuni
Krishna-katha rasha-gaan dibasha rajani
Krishnakatha lobhe bule samsara bhramiya
Na shunila Krishna-nama jagata chahiya

Translation –
Sri Narada Muni, who always sang the nectarian pastimes of Lord Krishna day and night, felt deeply distressed observing the miseries of others. To give out the holy names of Sri Krishna, Narada muni wandered throughout the universe. But the people of this world, being too attached to their material possessions, were not eager to accept the holy names.

Purport –
Narada muni , who is an eternal associate of Lord Krishna and Lord Narayana, became overwhelmed with ecstasy when he first beheld the enchanting form of Lord Gauranga. He confessed that he had never seen any other form of the Lord as merciful and as saturated with ecstatic love as that of Lord Gaurahari.

E heno karunanidhi kabhu nahi dekhi
Pasharite nari hiya chiyaila ankhi
(Chaitanya Mangala, 2.123)

See also  Lotus feet of Krishna and its Power | Rukmini, Krishna and Radha

‘I have never before seen such a reservoir of mercy. My heart can never forget him. My eyes yearn to see Him again and again.’

These words are very significant as they are spoken by Narada Muni, who is a very close associate of the supreme Lord, and who has had darsana of the Lord as Krishna and Narayana, on several previous occasions.

Text 29-30
Krishna rashe gada gada adha bhas
Kshaneke rodon – kshane atta atta hash
vina shune guna gaay – jhare ankhi neer
Krishna rashabesh munir antara bahir

Translation –
Being intoxicated in the sweet pastimes of Krishna, Narada’s voice choked up in ecstasy. One moment he wept while at the next he laughed out loud. While singing on the tunes of his vina, torrents of tears would rush from his eyes. Both externally and internally he remained submerged in the sweet mellows of Krishna’s pastimes.

Purport –
Sri Jagadananda Pandita writes in Prema Vivarta –

Gaura rupa gaura nama, gaura lila, gaura dham
ye na bhaje gaudete janmiya
radha krishna nama rupa , dham lila aparupa
kabhu nahi sparshe tara hiya

One who does not worship Lord Gauranga’s enchanting form, His name, His pastimes, and His pastime places, being born in Bengal, such a person’s heart can never ever come in contact with the wonderful treasures of Lord Krishna and Radharani’s name, form, pastimes and pastime places.

The above significant verse is not relevant only to the residents of Bengal, but to denizens of this entire world. Another name of Mahaprabhu is Viswambhara, or the Lord of the universe. The transcendental qualities and pastimes of Sri Radha and Krishna can only be realized by one who has received Mahaprabhu’s causeless mercy.

In the navadvipa dham mahatmya, Pushkara tirtha reveals:

Koti koti varna dhari Sri krishna bhajana
Tathapi namete rati na paye durjana
Gauranga bhajile dusta bhava duure jaya
Alpa dine vraja dhame Radha krishna paya

– even after chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna for millions of years, a rogue is not able to develop any taste for Harinama. But if he lovingly worships Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, his wicked mentality quickly vanishes and he soon achieves the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana.

So whether one desires to be a part of Lord Krishna’s eternal pastimes in Vrindavana (highest realm of the spiritual world) or one hankers to participate in Lord Chaitanya’s eternal sankirtana pastimes in Navadvipa (highest realm of the spiritual world), it is possible most easily by being subservient to and by worshipping Lord Gauranga.

So how can we try to achieve Lord Gauranga’s mercy ?
As discussed before in other purports as well, we should chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra daily (preferably atleast 16 rounds) by which we pray to Lord Chaitanya to engage us in His sankirtana. And at the same time we should ‘Read, Contemplate and Preach’ atleast one of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes everyday.

At this point we should note that Lord Gauranga is the supreme Lord and hence supremely independent. So we cannot demand for His mercy by any of our spiritual practices. However, we can act favourably and place ourselves in a suitable position so that we have a good chance of being a recipient of His causeless mercy. It is also very important that when we chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra, we sincerely pray to Sri Chaitanya to engage us in His sankirtana and not just chant mechanically. When we read, contemplate and preach His pastimes, we should try to actually relish them and not do it just for the sake of it. Moreover, our genuine love and devotion towards Mahaprabhu ,His qualities and His pastimes, shall determine our spiritual progress.

Lord Gauranga’s name and His pastimes are non different from Him. So when we meditate upon Him, His name or His pastimes, we are in fact directly associating with Him. The more we do this regularly, the more we cleanse our consciousness which further helps in reviving our spontaneous faith and devotion unto Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. One who meditates and contemplates upon Mahaprabhu’s ecstatic form and His enchanting blissful pastimes ,is very quickly cleansed of all contaminations. With a purified consciousness, they can then quite easily chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, offenselessly and attentively.

Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati (incarnation of Tungavidya Gopi) writes in Chaitanya Chandramrita :

jnana-vairagya-bhakty-adi
sadhayantu yatha tatha
Chaitanya charanambhoja-
bhakti-labhya-samam kutah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita,
Text 94)

– One may try very hard and wander throughout the whole universe to seek out and achieve real knowledge, renunciation, devotion and other exalted virtues, but one will never be able to achieve these virtues to that fullest extent like those who are devoted to Lord Chaitanya’s lotus feet.

Text 31-32
Aichhana premar range anga garaiya
Na shunila Krishna-nama samsara bhramiya
Antara dukhita muni bismita hiyay
Loka nistaran hetu na dekhi upaya

Translation –
Although ,each and every part of Narada muni’s body felt blissful coming in contact with ecstatic love of God, yet he could not hear the chanting of the holy names of Krishna, even after wandering throughout the entire world. He became saddened internally and felt surprised at heart. He began considering ways and means of delivering the suffering people.

Purport –
In Satya Yuga, the spiritual seekers used to practice severe austerities as laid down in astanga yoga process, in order to achieve their spiritual perfection.
In Treta yuga, elaborate sacrifices were specified as the yuga dharma for the age.
In the age of Dvapara, temple worship was designated as the yuga dharma, or the most suitable form of spiritual advancement in that age.
In the age of kali, Harinama sankirtana is specified as the yuga dharma. This is the only way by which one can achieve deliverance from the clutches of the material world in this present age of kali.

The Brihad Naradiya Purana states :

harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha

In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.

The mantra that Lord Chaitanya bestowed upon the people of this age, that we should chant daily is –

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

The word ‘Hare’ refers to the Supreme Lord’s internal energy or Srimati Radharani and the word ‘Krishna’ refers to Lord Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead. As Lord Gauranga is non different from Sri Radha and Krishna (Sri Krishna Chaitanya ,Radha Krishna Nahe anya), the syllables ‘Hare Krishna’ is non different to Lord Gauranga. Thus Lord Gauranga is also worshipped when we chant the above Hare Krishna Mahamantra.
While chanting on the above Hare Krishna Maha mantra we should try to meditate upon Lord Gauranga’s sankirtana pastimes. Chanting the Maha Mantra gives us an opportunity to pray so that Lord Gauranga accepts us as one of His own and engages us in His sankirtana movement. By Chanting the Maha mantra, we constantly beg for Mahaprabhu’s causeless mercy, which is our only hope for making any spiritual advancement.

Sri Jagadananda Pandita mentions in his Sri Prema vivarta –

Gaura ye sikhalo nama sei nama gao
anya sab nama mahatmya sei nama pao

Please chant the holy name that has been taught by lord Gauranga. By doing so you shall obtain the benefits of chanting all the other holy names.

In order to derive the maximum benefits from chanting the above Hare krishna Mahamantra , we must incessantly pray for Lord Gauranga’s causeless mercy.

In the navadvipa dham mahatmya, Pushkara tirtha reveals:

Koti koti varna dhari Sri krishna bhajana
Tathapi namete rati na paye durjana
Gauranga bhajile dusta bhava duure jaya
Alpa dine vraja dhame Radha krishna paya

– even after chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna for millions of years, a rogue is not able to develop any taste for Harinama. But if he lovingly worships Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, his wicked mentality quickly vanishes and he soon achieves the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana.

So how can we try to become a recipient of Lord Gauranga’s causeless mercy ?

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

dristah sprstah kirtitah samsmrito va
durasthair apy anato vadrito va
premnah saram datum iso ya ekah
Sri Chaitanya naumi devam dayalum
(Chaitanya Chandramrita,
Text 4)

– Whether seen, touched, glorified, intensely remembered, bowed down from afar or worshiped, Lord Gauranga causelessly awards to anyone and everyone the essence of pure unalloyed love for Himself. Thus I offer my respectful obeisances unto this most merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead.

At the same time, we can also try to serve and please Lord Nityananda as anyone who is loved by Lord Nitai becomes exceedingly dear to Lord Gaurahari. Nityananda prabhu urges everyone :

Chaitanya seva, chaitanya gao,
lao chaitanya nama
Chaitanye ye bhakti kare, sei mora prana
(Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 1.29)

Nityananda Prabhu requested everyone to serve Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, chant His glories and utter His name. Nityananda Prabhu claimed that one who loves and worships Lord Chaitanya becomes His very life and soul.

The Navadvipa dham mahatmya states –
‘ara eka gudha katha suna sarva jana, kali jive yogya vastu Gaura leela dhana’

Please hear the most confidential secret. The most suitable thing for the conditioned souls in this age of Kali, is the supreme treasure of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes.

So we should ‘Read, Contemplate and Preach’ atleast one of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes daily. We should read atleast one of Lord Gaurahari’s pastimes in a day, contemplate upon it and preach it to any person we desire. The next day we can Read, contemplate and preach a different pastime of Lord Gaurasundara. In this way we would purify our consciousness and progress very quickly in devotion.

In this way, by intensely worshipping and inspiring others to worship Lord Gauranga, we can fulfill the prediction He had previously made :

prithivite ache yata nagaradi-grama, sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama.
-My Name will be broadcasted and glorified in various towns, villages, cities of the world.

So to summarize, we should chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra daily (preferably atleast 16 rounds) by which we pray to Lord Chaitanya to engage us in His sankirtana. And at the same time we should ‘Read, Contemplate and Preach’ atleast one of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes everyday.

Text 33-34
Dangshilo shakala loke kali-kaalsarpe
Nirantara dagdha mugadha maya-darpe
Sishnodarparayan jagata bhoriya
Murchhita shakala loke Krishna pashariya

Translation –
(Narada Thought) ‘The venomous snake of Kali has bitten everyone and as a result the people of this world are aflame and mesmerized by their illusory pride. Being solely devoted unto their genitals and belly, the people of this world have totally forgotten Krishna’

Text 35-36
Lobh, moho, kaam, krodh, mod, abhimane
Nirantara sinche hiya-garala sechane
E ami amara boli mare akarane
Ke apani ke apana kichui na jane

Translation –
Their heart was continuously afflicted with the poison of greed, fascination, lust, anger, intoxication and pride, and they needlessly lived the philosophy of ‘I’ and ‘mine’. But they could not make out who they were and what was actually theirs.

Purport –
Lord Chaitanya reveals in the below verses why He had advented to this world :

Nija preme bhasaiba e brahmanda sob
Kabhu na rakhibo dukhha, shoka ek lob
Bhasaiba sthabara , jangama devagane
Shuni anandita kahe e das Locana-e
(Chaitanya Mangala, 568-569)

(Lord Gauranga said) ‘I shall flood the universe with the nectar of ecstatic devotional service unto Myself. Not the slightest tinge of suffering shall remain. I shall flood the moving, the unmoving, the demigods in that ecstatic nectar’. Locana das narrates this pastime, being filled with bliss.

In this verse Lord Chaitanya has predicted how the whole universe (not just the earth) shall be intoxicated with His divine love and be flooded in devotional ecstasy. He has predicted how being madly engrossed in His ecstatic love, the world shall be completely delivered from their miserable suffering condition. A person who receives Mahaprabhu’s causeless mercy cares for nothing else in this material world and achieves the highest perfection of life.
So worship of Lord Gauranga, the golden avatara, is very essence of devotional science, which shall soon be revealed in this fortunate age of kali.
